Eden Park vista  Save
Description: Caption reads "Vista in Eden Park. Bridging Victory Parkway in Eden Park, Cincinnati, is the first concrete span of its kind in the world. Its builders left the construction forms in place for some time after it was completed; for grave doubts were expressed as to the structure's ability to stand without support. The buttressed wall in the foreground is surmounted by a symbolic rook (eagle?), carved in stone." Eden Park Located between Gilbert Avenue and Columbia Parkway (U.S.) and comprised of about 185 acres in the Mount Adams community of Cincinnati, Ohio, Eden Park was assembled by a series of purchases beginning in 1859. The name came, naturally, from the Garden of Eden and was given by Nicholas Longworth who owned a large tract which constitutes the main portion of the park. Eden Park is the home of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Art Academy, the Navigation Monument, the Capitoline Wolf Statue, and the Irwin M. Krohn (Eden Park) Conservatory. View on Ohio Memory.

Regimental Colors of the 35th O.V.I.  Save
Description: This blue silk flag served as the regimental colors of the 35th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The flag was manufactured in the United States between 1861 and 1864. The United States arms is positioned in the flag's center. The arms consists of an embroidered, gold-colored bald eagle holding an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left talon. The eagle holds in its beak a painted, gold-outlined scroll with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Latin for "one out of many"). A shield with red and white stripes and a blue upper portion is positioned on the eagle's breast. The eagle has a beaded eye. Thirteen embroidered gold stars are arranged in an arc above the arms, with 27 gold rays rising above the stars. The text "PRESENTED BY WARREN CO. O." appears at the top of the flag. The battle name "CHICKAMAUGA" appears to the left of the arms, and the battle name "MISSION RIDGE" appears to the right. Gold text in a gold-outlined scroll below the arms reads: "35th REGIMENT, O.V.I." The flag's gold-knotted plied fringe is 4.5 cm in length. The rectangular flag measures 190 cm high by 191 cm wide. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Photographs of the flags and the paintings are now part of the society's archival collections. View on Ohio Memory.
