Description: Dated 1920, this photograph shows Warren G. Harding speaking from the front porch of his home in Marion, Ohio. This photograph is part of the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection. Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States from 1921-1923, was born near Marion, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1898 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature for two terms. Harding became Lieutenant Governor in 1903 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. While unsuccessful in a run for Governor in 1910, Harding won election to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty began promoting Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His campaign, known as “The Front Porch Campaign,” was centered on low-key speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy.” Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding died from a massive heart attack and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through Auglaize County, between stations 5518 and 5656. Roads, properties, bridges, aqueducts and other landmarks along the route are noted, including Six Mile Creek. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.

During his racing career, he was a part of the Peugeot, Maxwell, and Prest-O-Lite Teams. He stopped racing in 1917 to enlist in the army,, where he became a celebrated pilot. Description: Photograph of Main Street in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, looking north from Johnson Street. Thebuilding to the right is the Thurman House Hotel, also known as the Hotel Thurman, a 3-story hotel with 35 rooms built in 1888. The hotel was located at 137 South Sandusky Avenue. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas.
