Description: Aerial view of the town of Urbana, Ohio, in Champaign County, as it appeared in 1872. During the period, Urbana was growing in population, thanks to the completion of three railroads (visible at the top of the image) which helped link it to the rest of Ohio. At the center of the image can be seen Monument Square, located in downtown Urbana at the intersection of Scioto and Main Streets.
Established in 1805, the town became the county seat with Champaign County's creation in 1805. Town founder William Ward named Urbana after the word urbanity. View on Ohio Memory. Description: Aerial view of the Ohio Penitentiary and surrounding area after the fire of 1930. The fire killed 322 inmates, some of whom were stuck in their cells, and injured another 130. It was the worst disaster in American prison history. The prison, which was built in 1834, was notorious for having horrible conditions. At the time of the fire, the prison was at over twice its capacity. The origins of the fire have been debated, with some citing prisoners and others claiming an accident. Regardless of the origin, the fire prompted officials to address the overcrowding and establish the Ohio Parole Board in 1931. View on Ohio Memory.
