Description: George and Guy Blair were the stone masons who built the Fairfield County Courthouse in Lancaster, Ohio. Blackhand sandstone, used for the construction, was quarried in Fairfield County. The building is of Renaissance-Romanesque style with a flat roof, wide bracketed cornice and curved windows with ornamental window hoods. The iron fence surrounding the building was made by the Eagle Machine Company. The keystone over the entrance to the courthouse is the carved stone face of Henry Ebner, the architect from St Louis. Description: Portrait of John P. Green, who served as a state representative and senator in the late 19th century, and was the first African American elected to office in Cuyahoga County as Justice of the Peace in 1873. As a representative, Green introduced legislation to establish Labor Day in Ohio. Green was appointed by William McKinley in 1896 as a Government Stamp Agent. He returned to Cleveland in 1905 and practiced law with his sons, William and Theodore. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Governor Martin L. Davey (front row right, wearing top hat) and a group of men, ca. 1935. Davey was Ohio's governor from 1935 to 1939. Despite being a Democrat, Davey opposed many of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs and engaged in a public feud with federal relief administrator Harry Hopkins. Although the governor was cleared of all charges, the stigma cost him politically. He lost his bid for re-election in 1938. View on Ohio Memory.
