Description: The flag is made of the textile (wool), with 43 stars. The flag measures 140 by 210 cm. It is the first American flag raised on La Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico. As part of an island group in the Caribbean Sea often referred to as the Spanish Virgin Islands, Vieques lies 8 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland. It has been regarded as the sister island to Puerto Rico hence, nicknamed Isla Nena. In 1898, after Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico and certain surrounding islands were ceded to the United States. View on Ohio Memory.
