Description: This is a painting of Guidon of the 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. It is a swallowtail flag with 13 strips, seven red and 6 white, representing the 13 original colonies. The blue field has 34 stars representing the 34 states of the union at the beginning of the Civil war. There are 12 in the inner circle, 18 in the outer circle and one in each corner. The painting was done by Rob Needham and his name appears by the flag pole. At the bottom of the painting is written, "12th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Calvary". A guidon is a term applied to a type of flag, usually a swallowtail, carried by and artillery or cavalry company. View on Ohio Memory.
