collection Republic Steel Corporation Audiovisual Collection YHCIL MSS0192
Description: Photograph illustrating the size and complexity of the pipes delivering the gas to the furnaces at an Ohio mill operated by the Republic Steel Corporation. Gas producers were cylindrical refractory-lined chambers where air was blown through a bed of incandescent coal to produce a fuel gas for the furnaces. Now obsolete, this process was formerly used extensively with open-hearth furnaces. View on Ohio Memory.
