Description: Photograph of a Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway train crossing the Cuyahoga River to deliver raw materials to the site of the construction of a Republic Steel Corporation blast furnace at Cleveland, Ohio. Republic Steel signed a contract with the Defense Plant Corporation in September 1941 to build four new blast furnaces. Two 1275-ton blast furnaces were planned for the Cleveland District. The number 5 blast furnace was blown in for production in October 1943. View on Ohio Memory.
