Blast furnace car dumper in operation   Save
Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: This photograph depicts the operation of a blast furnace car dumper. Car dumpers were used to quickly empty rail cars of the iron ore, coal or coke, and limestone that supply the furnace. Blast furnaces burn alternating layers of iron ore and coke (as fuel) by forcing in large amounts of air, forming pig iron. This is the first step of the steelmaking process. This photograph belongs to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Audiovisual Archives, so it likely depicts a Youngstown company plant. View on Ohio Memory.
