Steelworkers prepare for molten pig iron   Save
Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: This photograph depicts steelworkers preparing a sand-floored room to receive a stream of molten iron at the base of a blast furnace. When it arrives in the channels, it will cool and solidify. Blast furnaces burn alternating layers of iron ore and coke (as fuel) by forcing in large amounts of air, forming the molten pig iron. This is the first step of the steelmaking process. This photograph belongs to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Audiovisual Archives, so it likely depicts a Youngstown company plant.
