Blast furnace skip hoist   Save
Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: This photograph depicts a skip hoist, a system of buckets mounted to transport materials up an incline. A blast furnace skip hoist transported coke, pig iron, and crushed limestone. Blast furnaces burn alternating layers of iron ore and coke (as fuel) by forcing in large amounts of air, forming pig iron. This is the first step of the steelmaking process. This photograph belongs to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Audiovisual Archives, so it likely depicts a Youngstown company plant. View on Ohio Memory.
