Blast furnace skip hoist and ovens   Save
Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: This photograph depicts a blast furnace skip hoist to the right and a series of ovens to the left. A blast furnace skip hoist transported coke, pig iron, and crushed limestone; the ovens are the chambers in which the iron is made. Blast furnaces burn alternating layers of iron ore and coke (as fuel) by forcing in large amounts of air, forming pig iron. This is the first step of the steelmaking process. This photograph belongs to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Audiovisual Archives, so it likely depicts a Youngstown company plant. View on Ohio Memory.
