Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: The incline in this photograph is a blast furnace skip hoist at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's Hubbard Works. Blast furnaces burn alternating layers of coke and iron ore to produce pig iron; this is the first step of making steel. Skip hoists are buckets on inclines, used to raise these raw materials.
