Description: This 3" by 5" (7.62 by 12.7 cm) photograph depicts Dorinda (Dee) Pitts Tabor, who was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1921. In 1941, she went to work in the steel mills to help support the war effort. She started as a shear helper at General Fireproofing in Youngstown until the company temporarily closed to re-tool. In 1942 she went to work as a crane operator at U.S. Steel in nearby McDonald, Ohio. She applied there because her husband, who returned home after being injured in the war, worked in the mill. She worked until she became pregnant in 1944. Tabor was mechanically inclined and enjoyed working with machinery. This photograph was taken in 1943. View on Ohio Memory.
