Description: These two 5" by 7" (12.7 by 17.78 cm) postcards depict the steel mills that defined Youngstown, Ohio. The first image shows the general offices of Carnegie Steel Company. The second shows the Carnegie Steel Works (Ohio Works). The Carnegie Steel Company was organized on July 1, 1892 with Andrew Carnegie as the principle shareholder. At the time it was organized, the Carnegie Steel Company was the largest steel company in the world. In 1901 Andrew Carnegie sold the Carnegie Steel Company to United States Steel Corporation. The Carnegie Steel Co./U.S. Steel Corp. had four plants in their Youngstown District Works: the Ohio Works, Upper Union Mills, Lower Union Mills, and McDonald Mills. The Ohio Works was organized in 1889 as the Ohio Steel Company. In 1895 the Ohio Steel Company became the first mill in the Mahoning Valley to manufacture steel.
