William B. Pollock Company Collection
Description: These two images relate to the William B. Pollock Company of Youngstown. One shows the boiler house at the company's mills in 1901. The boiler house provided the steam power that ran the plant's machinery. The other shows a ladle car, an innovation the company introduced in 1892. Ladle cars are large vessels that run on tracks and carry extremely hot liquids used in the steel-making process. The car pictured here is a 260 cubic foot Berg Cinder Car. This image was probably created for use in a catalog. The first photograph measures 7.7 by 9.5 inches (19.63 by 24.32 cm) and the second 7 by 9.2 inches (17.71 by 23.37 cm). William B. Pollock founded the company bearing his name in 1863. The company first produced boilers, but later expanded its products to include blast furnaces and equipment for the iron and steel industries. It occupied several locations in Youngstown, first on Basin Street, then South Market Street, and finally East Federal Plaza. The Pollock Company was eventually acquired by GATX, which closed the Youngstown plant in 1983. View on Ohio Memory.
