Description: Portrait of Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne, 6th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1863, Payne was instrumental in convincing that church to purchase Wilberforce University, a historically black college which had been earlier established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856. That same year, Payne was appointed president of Wilberforce, making him the first African American college president in the nation. View on Ohio Memory.
