The image is of Fort Sumter, which is surrounded by water at the front of the scene. The sky is dark and filled with smoke and fire from the attack. Artillery rains in from above the fort, both making contact with the fort and with the surrounding water. The fort itself is also shooting from cannons in the upper windows. The roof of the fort is in ruins due to the attack, with rubble laying around. There is a large American flag flying from the roof the fort despite the chaos of the scene.
