Zoar Collection
Description: This solid cherry cabinet arm chair was made in approximately 1840 in Zoar. This chair design was based on Greek-inspired Biedermeier designs from the early nineteenth century. It is an armed Klysmos-type chair. The chair has scrolled arms and a slightly-curving crest rail joined into frontal grooves of the stiles. The arm supports are a continuation of the legs. The seat back consists of a two-stringed lyre splat. There is a cabinet under the seat. Access to this cabinet is gained by a rectangular, lift-up door that has the original brass knob and hinges. A new plywood underframe and pine transverse give support under the upholstered portion of the seat. The modern upholstery is a floral patterned brocade accented with ornamental tacks. The Ohio Historical Society purchased the arm chair from T. F. Thornton of Milan, Ohio, in 1966. It is said to have descended in the family of a son of one of the Zoar community's leaders.
