Description: This round plane is wooden and flat in front. The back and sides are bowed. The blade is concave. The plane is marked ""2 DR Barton"" and ""19"" in pencil. Three-piece woodworking compass plane was manufactured by David R. Barton in Rochester, New York, and dates from 1849-1874. Barton (1805-1875) was a partner in many different tool making companies, all in Rochester, New York. The Ohio Historical Society received this plane from Miss Margaret E. Lautenklos of Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, in 1939. The plane belonged to Adam Lautenklos, who was one of a family of German coopers who settled in the United States in approximately 1845.
