Description: A photograph of the exterior of the Carlton Wall house, designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, taken by Joe Munroe in 1942. The home is built in the Usonia style, a style which Wright developed. He designed around sixty homes in this style, which consists of small one-story homes without garages or much storage space, often built in L-shapes to fit on odd or uniquely-shaped lots. They often have large windows, as a desire to bring the outside in is paramount in the design. This particular home is built in a series of hexagons radiating out from a central spot, giving the building a snowflake shape, hence its nickname, ""Snowflake."" Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work.
