Snowy winter road in New York State   Save
Joe Munroe Archive
Description: Farms and farm life revolve around the weather. This 1948 photograph by Joe Munroe demonstrates how farmers must be prepared for anything, as a New York snowstorm has buried the area in thick snow. Farmers must prepare during the summer and fall for the winter months ahead, including storing feed and planning shelter for livestock. These issues are often compounded by the difficulty of travel on snow-covered county roads. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. View on Ohio Memory.
