Description: Joe Munroe captures one of his contemporaries in this shot of Harry Callahan. Callahan was a self-taught photographer from Detroit, famous for his work in both black-and-white and color prints. His main subject matter tended to be his own life and the cities in which he lived. As a teacher in Chicago, he tried to impress upon students the importance of photographing their own lives, not just famous objects or places. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work.
