Description: Photograph of Mordecai J. Benedict (1845-1927) outside of his home, "Valley Cottage," at the Alum Creek Friends' Settlement in Peru Township, Morrow County, Ohio. Daniel Benedict, Mordecai's father, kept an Underground Railroad station in the home, and Mordecai served as a conductor. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961), who began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history. View on Ohio Memory.
