Description: J.D. Hulbert (b.1809) was an Ohio abolitionist involved in the Underground Railroad. He used his warehouse, located on a dock in Ashtabula Harbor on the short of Lake Erie, to conceal fugitive slaves seeking their freedom. After supplying these freedom seekers with provisions and money, Hulbert would use his business contacts to procure passage on ships bound for Canada. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history.
