Description: Mark Campbell McMaken (1800-1899) was an Underground Railroad operator at Hamilton, Ohio, in Butler County. While working on the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad, McMaken would provide directions to fugitive slaves along the tracks, directing them safely to John Harris' house in Hamilton, or 15 miles north of Hamilton to a Quaker settlement. McMaken would later serve as a Whig Representative in the Ohio General Assembly. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history. View on Ohio Memory.
