Description: This ca. 1905 photograph shows Jeremiah "Jere" A. Brown (1841-1913). Brown was a Cleveland, Ohio Republican politician who served as a state representative for two terms (1886-1887 and 1888-1889), sponsored legislation preventing life insurance companies from discriminating against African Americans, helped secure funds for Wilberforce College, and repealed Ohio's Black Codes. This item is part of the Hallie Q. Brown Collection, which contains paper and photographic materials related to the professional and personal life of Hallie Quinn Brown and her family. Hallie Quinn Brown (1845, 1849, or 1850-1949) was an African American educator, writer and activist born to freed parents Frances Jane Scroggins and Thomas Arthur Brown. This collection includes Brown’s publications, documents relating to her community work in Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota, information regarding Wilberforce University and Central State University, as well as photographs of and correspondence between members of the Brown family.
