: George Latimer (1820-1896) was a fugitive slave who was purchased from his captors by friends in eastern Massachusetts in 1842. This cabinet card is from the Reed Studio in Lynn, Massachusetts. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history.
