Description: Engraved portrait depicting Moses Sawyer of North Weare, New Hampshire, who concealed fugitive slaves escaping to freedom in Canada on the Underground Railroad. The engraving was done by A.H. Ritchie. This engraving was sent to Wilbur H. Siebert by Ellen R. Smith, Moses's daughter. Siebert (1866-1961) began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history.. View on Ohio Memory.
