Description: John W. Jones (b. 1817) was a fugitive slave from Virginia who became an Underground Railroad agent in Elmira, New York. The original photograph was taken about 1850. This copy was sent to Wilbur H. Siebert by Susan L. Crane. Siebert (1866-1961) began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history.
