Skip hoist on the side of blast furnace   Save
Youngstown Sheet and Tube Audiovisual Archives
Description: The incline seen on the side of the blast furnace is the skip hoist. This steel structure provided the means for transporting raw materials to the top of the blast furnace, thereby eliminating the jobs of men known as "top fillers." This 1930s-era photograph is of an unidentified location, but the features are comparable to the techniques used at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's Campbell Works' blast furnaces.
