Description: Henry Clay was born on April 12, 1777, in Hanover County, Virginia. By the age of twenty, Clay had established a law practice in Lexington, Kentucky. He served in the US House of Representatives and Senate throughout his life and even as the Speaker. Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise in 1820. While many Ohioans opposed Clay's compromise, Clay remained popular within the state. His political career is full of attempts to foster compromise with the North and South. Clay died from tuberculosis on June 29, 1852. This engraving of Clay was for the American Review, 1844. View on Ohio Memory.
