Description: This illustration depicts Eliza, a character from "Uncle Tom's Cabin," crossing the Ohio River on ice, pursued by slave catchers and dogs. Published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is an anti-slavery novel that depicts the harsh realities of slavery and which helped fuel the abolitionist movement in the United States. This picture appears in "Pathways of Progress: A Short History of Ohio," published by David Bowman in 1943. View on Ohio Memory.
