Military recruiting office illustration   Save
Printed Material
Description: This illustration depicts a recruiting office, likely during the time of the United States Civil War. A man in Civil War-era military clothing is seated at a table with a large, open book in front of him on the table. He appears to be recording information that the young man, standing across the table, is supplying. Other men, ranging in age, can be seen standing around the crowded office, reading newspapers or looking on as the younger man enlists in the military. A broadside or paper on the back wall of the room has a large headline that reads "Fort Sumter" partially obscured by one man's head. The illustration, by L.J. Bridgman, is from Alexander Black's 1888 book "The Story of Ohio." View on Ohio Memory.
