: Portrait of Major General Lew Wallace, ca. 1860-1869. Wallace is shown in his dress uniform, in a frock coat or shell jacket with two stars on his shoulder boards, indicating his rank. Wallace was responsible for the defense of Cincinnati, Ohio, when it was in danger of attack from the Confederate Army in the fall of 1862. In addition to his military career and service as Governor of the New Mexico Territory, Wallace is famous for his novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," published in 1880. View on Ohio Memory.
