Description: This carte de visite photograph is of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut in a formal dress Naval uniform, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. The William T. Sherman album contains photographs of a large number of Civil War officers that possibly served with General Sherman or were known by him. Farragut was born on July 5, 1801, near Nashville, Tennessee. At nine years of age, he was commissioned as a midshipman in the United States Navy, due to the influence of his adoptive father. He was the first Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral and Admiral of the United States Navy. He died at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on August 14, 1870. View on Ohio Memory.
