Description: This carte de visite photograph is of General John Bell Hood, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. General Hood is shown facing the camera, with emblems visible on his collar that indicate his rank in the Confederate military. John Bell Hood was born in 1831 in Owingsville, Kentucky. He was educated at the United States Military Academy, and graduated 44th out of 52 cadets in 1853. He served briefly in the U.S. Army, but after the Battle of Fort Sumter, he resigned to join the Confederate Army. He was wounded at both the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Chickamauga. He settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, after the war. He died there on August 30, 1879, during the yellow fever epidemic. View on Ohio Memory.
