Description: Carte de visite photograph of Major General John Alexander Logan, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. John Alexander Logan was born in Murphysboro, Illinois, on February 9, 1826. His formal education did not begin until he was fourteen years old, when he entered Shiloh College in Shiloh Hill, Illinois, where he studied spelling, arithmetic, grammar and Latin. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Louisville in 1851. He served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. After the war, he returned to politics, serving as a Republican from Illinois in both the House of Representatives and Senate. Prior to the war, he had served in the U. S. House of Representatives. He died on December 26, 1886, in Washington, DC, where he is buried in the United States Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.
