Description: Carte de visite photograph of Major General Richard James Oglesby, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. Richard James Oglesby was born in Floydsburg, Oldham County, Kentucky. Orphaned in 1832, he went to Decatur, Illinois, to live and work with his uncle as a farmhand, rope-maker and carpenter. He attended law school at the Louisville Law School in 1848. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to Major General. In 1865, he was elected the 14th Governor of Illinois and served until 1869. He died on April 24, 1899 in Elkhart, Illinois, and was buried in Elkhart Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.
