Description: Photograph of the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, taken by Mathew Brady on July 4, 1863, the day after the Battle of Gettysburg. The Union army, led by Major General George G. Meade, claimed victory over the Confederates, led by General Robert E. Lee, who withdrew from the battlefield on July 4. An estimated total of 51,000 casualties were suffered during this three-day battle, including the fallen soldiers seen here.
