Description: A portrait of George A. Custer. George Armstrong Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio on December 5, 1839. He spend much of his young life with his half-sister in Monroe, Michigan. In 1858, he received an appointment to West Point, where he graduated last in his class. During the Civil War, he was assigned as an aid to General George McClellan. He eventually was granted a temporary Brevet Brigadier General, returning to Captain after the war was over. On February 9, 1864, he married Elizabeth Clift Bacon. They had no children. Custer died at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Little Bighorn, Montana on June 25, 1876. He was initially buried on the battle field. Later his body was removed to the cemetery at West Point.
