Description: Admiral David D. Porter's ironclads running past the Confederate batteries at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The fighting at Vicksburg was incredibly significant in the American Civil War, being that it was fought for the purpose of gaining access to the important Mississippi River. In addition to providing a corridor for shipping provisions it would disrupt the Confederate war effort. The fight to take Vicksburg would be long and arduous with many thousands of men dying on both sides of the conflict, though the Confederate soldiers took the worst of it. Vicksburg would eventually be taken after a multi-month siege and became a great Union victory in the war. View on Ohio Memory.
