Description: Woody Hayes taking command of ship from Captain Engles, ca. 1943. Wayne Woodrow ("Woody") Hayes was born on February 14, 1913, in Clifton, Ohio, and graduated from Denison University in 1935. Upon graduating, Hayes coached high school football until the outbreak of WWII. During WWII, Hayes served in the United States Navy. Upon leaving the Navy in 1946, Hayes embarked upon a career coaching college football. Hayes coached at Miami University for two seasons and then became the head coach at The Ohio State University where he remained from 1951 until 1978. Hayes received National Coach of the Year honors on two separate occasions. Hayes also served as a professor in the Department of History, where he taught military history courses. Hayes died on March 12, 1987. View on Ohio Memory.
