Ohio Statehouse grounds deed   Save
Leases and Deeds, ca.1801-1965
Description: This deed is for a ten-acre plot of land on the east bank of the Scioto River, the site of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. Lyne Sterling sold the land to the state of Ohio on November 20, 1812, after the legislature in Zanesville passed an act calling for a permanent seat of government to be located in Columbus. The Ohio History Connection holds the original deed, shown here. It is four pages and measures 8.25" x 13" (20.96 x 33.02 cm). A second copy of the deed held by the Franklin County Recorders Office was destroyed by fire on March 31, 1879, under mysterious circumstances. On July 2, 1996, Auditor of State Jim Petro re-recorded the deed for the Ohio Statehouse. View on Ohio Memory.
