Ohio Penitentiary Collection
Description: The Ohio Penitentiary, the large building shown to the left of the train, was located at 254 West Spring Street. It was constructed in 1934, four years after the original state penitentiary caught fire. The new penitentiary was designed to hold 500 inmates. The image shown here measures approximately 7" x 4" (17.78 x 10.16 cm). In April 1955, the Ohio Penitentiary housed 5,235 prisoners, the most ever incarcerated at the prison. Most inmates were removed from the prison by 1972, following completion of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The Ohio Penitentiary was officially closed in 1984. The site was abandoned and the remaining buildings were demolished in 1997 to allot space for Nationwide Arena. View on Ohio Memory.
