Ohio Department of Industrial and Economic Development Collection
Description: The U.S. Grant Bridge, shown in this photograph, connects Portsmouth, Ohio to South Shore, Kentucky along Route 23. The bridge was built in 1927 and named after Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), the eighteenth president of the United States. In 1974, Ohio Speaker of the House Vern Riffe and state Representative William Harsha moved to pass legislation that would remove the toll from Grant Bridge, a major step toward encouraging commerce between southern Ohio and northern Kentucky. The first U.S. Grant Bridge was replaced with a steel cable bridge in 2004. This photograph measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
