: This image shows the front facade of the Ross County Probate Archives. This building sits behind the courthouse and was used as the county jail until 1989 when the Sheriff's Department was moved into a new law complex. It reopened in 1996 as the Ross County Probate Archives. The original building had 18 jail cells: 16 for men, 1 for women and 1 for the mentally ill. The fence was erected ca. 1830. It was moved to Main Street in the 1850s when the present courthouse was built. In the 1980s, a streetscape project moved the fence again to sit on the west, north and east sides of a plaza in front of the old jail.
