Description: A black and white postcard of the Lincoln's New Salem State Park Historic Site located in New Salem, Illinois. Lincoln’s New Salem is a reconstructed historic site preserving the village of New Salem from the 1830s, during which Abraham Lincoln resided for six years during his twenties. Lincoln’s New Salem includes four general stores, a blacksmith shop, cooper shop, a tavern, a school house, two doctor offices, a carding mill, a grist and saw mill, and many residences. However, by the 1840s, the town was abandoned. The town quickly died after nearby Petersburg became the county seat for Menard County and driving away the local business. Lincoln's New Salem site showcase twenty-three log cabins reconstructed on the originals' location. View on Ohio Memory.
