Description: Carte de visite of Pvt. George D. Pyle, who served with Company F of the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. While the regiment was organized in the then-unoffical region of West Virginia, most of the troopers were recruited from Southern Ohio. The reverse reads: "Killed April 8, 1865 near Appomatox Courthouse. Said to have been the last man killed in the war as it was a short time before Lee surrendered." While Lee did surrender then, fighting continued for some time afterwards, especially in the West. View on Ohio Memory.
