Description: Carte de visite of General Wesley Merritt, who served with the Union Army during the Civil War. Born in New York City, Merritt served with distinction at Gettysburg, Brandy Station, Yellow Tavern, and in General Philip Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. He served as Sheridan's second in command at Appomattox Courthouse, and went on to serve in the Western United States before being appointed the military governor of the Philippines.
